Our goal is to find each and every horse that comes to us that perfect home. This is a long term commitment and something we don’t take lightly. When each horse arrives we assess their needs and attend to their immediate physical health (worming, teeth, hooves, nutrition etc.). As part of their rehabilitation we then put them out to spell; this involves giving them time to be out with the Elouera herd and the time to just be a horse again, without too much interference from humans. In some instances this can be for a period of up to 6 months.
Once a horse has been spelled we bring them back in and assess their capabilities. Are they suitable for riding? What are their limitations and how can we leverage their strengths and get them ready for re-homing? We do our best to work with each horse and provide them with a tailored programme suited to their situation and abilities. These are what we call short-term residents who have a future to be adopted out to the right human.
The reality however, is that sometimes we meet horses that are just too damaged; whether that’s physically or mentally. These horses require a lot of specialist attention, time and expertise. In these circumstances we commit to caring for these horses long-term and they become permanent residents of Elouera.
